UFC President Dana White spoke to ‘Shout! The Buffalo Football’ podcast and had some interesting comments on Conor McGregor. The Irish megastar is set to return to UFC action on January 23, 2021, against Dustin Poirier. The bout is a rematch of a fight that took place back at UFC 178 in September 2014.
Chiefly, the bout marks the return of Conor McGregor following yet another spontaneous retirement from MMA in early 2020. McGregor last fought back in January 2021 and stomped over Donald Cerrone with a 40 second TKO win. Poirier is the perfect high profile match-up that would inject the Irishman back into the mix at lightweight.
Dana White on what’s next for Conor McGregor
Although the fight between McGregor and Poirier is far from decided, it seems as though the UFC boss has an idea about what’s next for ‘The Notorious’. White explained that he would like to rematch McGregor and Nurmagomedov if Conor were to win in a ‘perfect world’.
“When I fly out there, Khabib is gonna be there, too. So, I’m going to meet with Khabib while I’m there. In a perfect world, if Conor wins this fight, I would love to see the rematch with him and Khabib. It’s the biggest fight that can be made and it’s the fight that makes sense.”
The numbers don’t lie
Given the numbers that UFC 229: Khabib vs McGregor 1 did, it’s no surprise that White is keen to run things back. Furthermore, the long-time company President has been looking for the perfect opportunity to get Khabib back into the mix. ‘The Eagle’ is formally retired from the sport and getting him back into the fold may be easier said than done.
It’s unclear whether Nurmagomedov will come out of retirement to fight Conor McGregor as it’s a fight he has vehemently opposed. Regardless of that, ‘The Notorious’ has a significant task on his hands facing Poirier who’s a straight savage these days. Chiefly, the fight isn’t expected to play out like it did the first time and McGregor will have to focus his energy on ‘The Diamond’.
